Specification   :The CO2 growth chambers are of 800 Lt. capacity with improved Intellus Ultra Controller (IUC system). The interior space of 29.7 ft3 (0.8 m3) with work area of 21.6 ft2 (2.0 m2) is provided on four tiers. These chambers are mainly used for the purpose of maintaining the insect culture and conducting the feeding trials for measuring the impacts of elevated CO2 and temperature which are vital parameters of climate change.

Click to ViewThe chamber has temperature range of 4°-44°C (±0.5°C) lights on and 2°-44°C (±0.5°C) lights off. Additive humidity control of higher than ambient to 80% (±10%) lights on for set temperatures between 15° to 30°C is maintained and also Humidity control of higher than ambient to 90% (±10%) lights off for temperatures between 15° to 30°C. The self-contained air-cooled condensing unit with hot gas bypass system is provided in the chamber for temperature regulation and cooling. For lighting system fluorescent lamps are horizontally mounted in pairs above each shelf Intensity programmable up to 65 μmoles/m2/s of light irradiance measured @ 6" from lamps on 2 on/off light events. The CO2 supply in the range of 0-3000 ppm is provided with appropriate regulatory system attached to CO2 tank.

  Working Principles
Click to ViewThe set temperature and CO2 conditions are maintained in the chambers. The control system for this chamber consists of two Intellus microprocessor programmable controllers and the mechanical components that condition the chamber environment. Intellus microprocessor controls/maintains chamber temperature, CO2, lighting and utilizes programs. The left hand Intellus controller controls temperature, CO2 and lighting. The right hand controller is used to monitor two additional temperature zones inside the chamber. The sensors for the two additional zones are labelled ≠ 2 and ≠ 3 inside the chamber. The right hand controller does not control any chamber functions. It is strictly used as a monitoring device.

These chambers are highly useful to conduct the feeding trials to understand the effect of elevated CO2 and constant temperatures on insect pests. The information on variation in growth and development of insects, change in the insect performance indices and variation biochemical constituents in both crops and insects can be captured. In addition to these several pot culture studies on impact of elevated CO2 on short statured crops can be conducted.1. These have limited space and thus the respective indenting users should reserve their season/duration/time well in advance 2. The facility is extendable for the users only when the experiments of CRIDA do not coincide. 3. No man power is provided by the CRIDA in maintenance of crop/data collection/ observations or any activity incidental to the experimentation. 4. Acknowledgement of CRIDA and facility is mandatory in any form of presentation/documentation.
