Instrument/Facility Name: Fat Analyzer
Make                                   : FOSS, DENMARK
Model                                  : SOXTEC 2043
Specification   :The FOSS TECATOR SOXTEC 2043 Fat Analyzer is a semi-automatic system comprising of Extraction and Control units and can handle a batch of six samples at a time. Typical solvent recovery is 80%, only 10 ml solvent is used per sample.

Click to ViewCrude fat is determined by solvent extraction method. The sample to be analyzed is weighed into thimbles and inserted in the extraction unit. The cups are heated by the electrical heating plate.

  Working Principles
Click to ViewThe 3-step extraction procedure consists of boiling, rinsing and recovery. (i) Boiling: The sample is immersed in boiling solvent for 20 minutes (ii) Rinsing: Sample is raised out of boiling solvent. The condensed solvent drips through sample. This step usually takes 30- 40 minutes. (iii) Recovery: The condensed solvent is collected in the collection vessel; usually takes 10 minutes. After extraction, the sample cups are kept in hot air oven at 100 ºC for 1 h for evaporating the solvent completely and the quantity of lipid is estimated by calculation.
