  Working Principles
Click to ViewA headspace sample is normally prepared in a vial containing the sample. Volatile components from complex sample mixtures can be extracted from non-volatile components and further isolated in the headspace or vapor portion of a sample vial. An aliquot of the vapor in the headspace is delivered to a GC system for separation of all of the volatile components. The components in the vapor passes through a column and separation takes place on the basis of preferential adsorption. The separated compounds are detected using a FID detector.

HS-GC is widely used in the detection of: Residual solvents in pharmaceuticals, food, packing material, aluminium and plastic films Flavour compounds in beverages and spices Odour compounds in foodstuffs, herbs, flowers and perfumes Rancidity of fat and oil Analysis of beverages for diketones (in beer), sulfur compounds, alcohols, esters, aldehydes and acids Ethanol in blood, food and beverages Volatile fermentation products from anaerobic bacteria. Methyl esters of fatty acids of vegetable oils Analyses of volatiles from leaf samples and estimation of residual solvents from samples may be undertaken.
