Click to ViewEM unit of NIHSAD has a 120 kV class high-resolution transmission electron microscope (JEM-1400, Jeol, Japan). The unit also has an ultramicrotome (Ultracut-UCT, Leica) and a knife maker (EMKMR2, Leica) for ultra-thin sectioning of tissue samples. The services of the TEM unit add to the existing array of diagnostic facilities available at NIHSAD for quick confirmation of various exotic and emerging viral infections of animals. Apart from being useful in ultrastructural studies on viral infections, it can be of great help in identification and confirmation of viral etiology in case of unknown disease outbreaks.

  Working Principles
Click to ViewTransmission electron microscopy uses high energy electrons which are accelerated to nearly the speed of light. The electron beam behaves like a wave-front with wavelength about a million times shorter than light waves. When an electron beam passes through a ultrathin-section specimen of a material, electrons are scattered. A sophisticated system of electromagnetic lenses focuses the scattered electrons into an image on a phosphor-screen or charge coupled device (CCD) camara

Ultrastructure studies.• Guidelines for submission of samples is given in • Interpretation of data/results should be done by the user. • The analytical data/images are provided for research use only. They should not be used as certificates in legal disputes. • It is desirable that the work done using the facility be acknowledged in publications/thesis/dissertations and a note in this regard may be sent to us for record purpose. • Diffraction analysis is not performed at NIHSAD, Bhopal.
